Entry requirements:
This course is for students 19 years old and over.

Entry will be subject to interview with portfolio and reference plus one of the following:

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Graphic Design
  • At least one GCE A Level in a relevant subject at grade A-C;
    OR more tan one GCE A Level at grades C-E;
    AND GCSE passes at grade A*-C
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further eduction institution
  • Related work experience

Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid or/orunpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector.

LEVEL OF ENGLISH: ILETS: 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in each section) or euqivalent.

 

Course content:

This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the Graphic Design industry. Students will be provided with training in the essential skills of visual communication and will have the opportunity to explore a range of forms of visual communication including illustration, print, typography, lens based media, time based media and computer aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach students will be provided with a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields.


The course is delivered largely through practical work produced in response to time specific and industry related briefs. Practical work is supported with study of art and design history and contemporary professional practice. Emphasis is placed the development of informed and creative responses leading to professional outcomes that meet the needs of the brief.

• Ideas Generation and Development in Art and Design
• Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design
• Professional Practice in Art and Design
• Communication with Images in Art and Design
• 2D, 3D and Time-based Digital Applications
• Photographic Materials, Techniques and Technology
• Drawing Techniques and Processes in Art and Design

Projects will be enriched through professional guest speakers, visits to galleries and exhibitions as well as live / simulated live briefs.

Course Structure:

The course is delivered in weekly, fortnightly, monthly and six weekly projects.


Students are required to begin the course with a starter kit of Art and Design materials and equipment.

Course resources:

Brand new Apple Mac facilities including printing and scanning; programmes include Photoshop CS, Illustrator CS, In Design, GoLive and Quark Express.

Assessment:

Assessment is continuous throughout the year.

Next step:
Progression to HND, B.A. (Hons) Degree or professional practise in a range of careers in graphics, related industries, including design for advertising, desk top publishing, illustration and digital imaging.
