South Thames College’s adult learners are awarded as part of National Adult Learners’ Week.
13 May 2009
Over 100 adult learners were awarded for their outstanding successes at the prestigious South Thames College Adult Learners’ Awards ceremony at the Wandsworth Civic Suite on May 12th, 2009. This event is timed to celebrate National Adult Learners’ Week, sponsored by NIACE (National Institute of Adult Continuing Education). National Adult Learners’ Week, now in its 18th year, seeks to inspire adults across the country to learn new skills, add to their qualifications or take up a leisure course in their spare time.
South Thames College has over 18000 adult learners ranging from 19 to 90+ years of age. Some have returned to study after taking a break, some have come to develop their language skills, we have learners who are studying part time to re-skill or up-skill in order to obtain better jobs, some who are doing apprenticeships so they can still earn whilst gaining valuable skills and then we have learners who are studying just for leisure. This is proof that there is value and importance in life long learning and that there is a growing demand from adults to better themselves by studying at further education colleges like South Thames College.
Of the 100 learners who were rewarded, there were nine special individual awards and of these, one overall winner. The winners of the nine special awards were:
- Most positive Contribution to College Life - Shaukat Sultana Mir
- Life Long Learner Award - Sandria Baker
- Outstanding Progress and Achievement Award - Keiran McDermott
- Outstanding Commitment Award - Lorna Morgan and Barbara Campbell
- International Student of the Year - Ki Ling Chan
- Apprentice of the Year - Steven Butt
- Access Student of the Year - Satvinder Bhalla
- Higher Education Student of the Year - Dominic Markes
- Train to Gain Student of the Year - Awartif Sayed-Ahmed.
The prize of the overall Adult Learner of the Year which was sponsored by SELLLN (South East London Lifelong Learning Network) went to Satvinder Bhalla. He is an absolutely exceptional student that has managed to excel in all areas of college life despite having challenging long-term difficulties. He has refused to be limited or defined by these learning difficulties and has overcome many obstacles to succeed. Satvinder is studying an Access to Law course at South Thames College and has obtained a place at Queen Mary University next year to read Law, which is an exceptional achievement. His attitude towards his studies and his approach to life has been truly exemplary and he is a role model for all learners and a credit to South Thames College.
The evening was an outstanding success which would not have been possible without our generous sponsors SELLLN, Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce, Wandsworth Council, BAM Construction, Regal Litho, Hot Courses and Run Print Run.
