South Thames College and Merton College merge to form a combined, stronger college

31 July 2009

South Thames College and Merton College are pleased to announce that a merger between the two colleges has now been approved and will be effective from 1 August 2009.

Sue Rimmer, Principal of South Thames College said "The merger is a positive step forward for both colleges and will better enable us to serve both local communities and provide first class learning for students in the both boroughs and the surrounding areas."

Both colleges will continue to offer a broad range of courses to serve the needs of their local communities. Indeed the provision of the two colleges is highly complementary with South Thames offering Hair and Beauty, Creative Industries and Construction at its Wandsworth Campus, and Merton offering A-levels, Motor Cycle Maintenance and Catering at the Merton Park Campus.

Local MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan, said, "I am delighted that the merger can now become a reality. The merger will bring together the best bits of Merton and South Thames Colleges to produce London's Premier Further Education College. I am looking forward to even more local residents benefiting from the excellent teaching and training provided by South Thames College."

The merger represents the strongest way forward for learners, employers and local communities and was formed in response to recent changes in government policy and funding priorities, in particular the prioritisation of demand led employer focussed provision and the needs of young people and adults in Wandsworth and Merton. The merger will help build a stronger college that will enable students to learn in the best possible environment with state of the art facilities.

Sally McEnhill, Principal of Merton College said "The merger will enable greater investment in teaching and learning and mean both colleges can build on their successes."

The combined College looks forward to welcoming students in September for the new academic year and now with an even wider range of courses, there is sure to be something for everyone.
