Entry requirements:
This course is for students 19 years old and over.

 

  • A BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment
  • At least one GCE A level in a relevant subject at grade A-C; OR more than one GCE A level at grades C-E in a related subject AND GCSE passes at grade A*-C including English Language, Maths and Science
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Mature students with relevant industrial experience may apply through the AP (E) L procedure.  Candidates who have a minimum of five years construction industry experience and evidence of attending short courses, which demonstrate their knowledge and skill in this sector, will be considered.
Course content:

This course is primarily aimed at those employed in the construction industry who are seeking to gain an industry recognised qualification. The course provides one of the key qualifications in the Construction Management and Surveying Technology disciplines.


The essential aim of the course is to provide students with a range of knowledge and skills needed to fulfil a wide range of technical and managerial work. The outcome should be higher level technicians who are able to tackle and take responsibility for well specified positions throughout the construction industry.

Career Opportunities

HNCs provide a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression, professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into higher education. Many students move towards progessional status by progressing onto further studies: for example a HND in Construction and Built Environment or a related degree.

Students may also take up employment and progress through professional qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Institure of Building (CIOB), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Course Structure:

Year 1 (level 4 units):

  • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Applied Mathematics for Construction and the Built Environment
  • Design Principles and Application for Construction and the Built Environment
  • Science and Materials for Construction and the Built Environment

Year 2 (level 4 units):

  • Site Surveying Procedures for Construction and the Built Environment
  • Engineering Geology and Soil Mechanics
  • Level 5 units: Structural Analysis and Design
  • Group Project in the Construction Industry
Assessment:

Each module is assessed using a combination of the following methods: assignments, case studies, presentations, practical projects and tests/exams.
