Information for Schools

The College has links with many local high schools both within the borough of Wandsworth and other London boroughs.  Through the schools, we offer access to a wide range of courses and guidance to students progressing to post-16 education.

Wandsworth 14 - 19 Strategic Partnership

Hairdressing Taster Session

The College plays a key role in the partnership covering all secondary schools and post 16 education providers in Wandsworth.  This partnership is responsible for delivering the government's 14 - 19 strategy locally.  This includes developing new qualifications for young people.  The College is currently working on the development of three specialist diplomas that will be available from 2008 - in health and social care, construction and creative studies.

There are currently 260 14 - 16 year olds from local schools undertaking courses within the Schools Links and Flex provision.  These learners attend on a part-time basis to undertake level 1 and 2 courses in a range of vocational areas.

With the School Links programme learners have the opportunity to progress from the age of 14 through to 19 and beyond, when they can enter into higher education.

How do we work with Schools to enable progression pathways for students?

Stockwell Park School

Our Schools Liaison department provides a service to  schools both within and outside of the borough as well as youth services in advising potential students, parents, tutors and advisors on aspects relating to Further and Higher Education within South Thames College.  We work with local schools, sixth form departments and youth services to ensure students make infomed choices regarding their future.

Activities include:

  • Workshops and presentations on a wide range of subjects in Schools or in College
  • Attending events such as careers events or parents evenings held in local schools, to provide information on a variety of subjects for students and parents alike.
  • We can organise 'taster' sessions for year 10, 11 and 12 pupils related to FE or HE.
  • Student ambassadors are on hand to come and talk to your students about College life, finances and much more.

One School commented:

"The six week Taster Sessions at South Thames have linked in really well with the School's Leadership Development project and students have found the taster programme of great benefit.  The pupils are really using the taster sessions to balance their work in the school, it has come at a crucial time in assisting future decision making.

The teaching by the college met all the criteria expected by students and more.

Personally and as a school we would like to continue to collaborate with South Thames College."
