If you want to study a course that could help you into work or university, check out our school partnerships programme at South Thames College, Merton Campus.
You’ll come to College every Tuesday during term to get hands on learning in exciting courses and keep up with school for the rest of the week.
It’s a bit more grown up – no uniforms and more freedom to manage your work.

Catering and Hospitality
NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Food Preparation
NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality Services
Duration: 2 years
When: Tuesdays, 9am - 3pm
About the course
By training in our brand new kitchens and restaurant, you’ll get hands on experience as well as learning about an industry that’s always looking for workers. Even if you don’t make this your career, you’ll learn great skills like how to cook.
Course content
You’ll cover core areas like food prep and service and also important subjects like food safety and hygiene. We have our own restaurant so you’ll end up training with paying customers.
Assessment
Some assignments and practical tests.
Entry requirements
You need an interest in cooking and/or the service industry.
What next?
Take the next course up or find work in the catering trade – front of house or the kitchen. There are also apprenticeships available.
NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Food Preparation

Childcare

About the course
This course gives you skills in childcare, education and playwork. You’ll get the confidence to take other courses or begin work with young children.
Course content
You’ll learn key areas like parenting, food and nutrition and human development and more. You also learn job hunting skills and you might get to do a work placement – great for the new CV.
Assessment
A multiple choice question paper, a personal action plan to complete plus your tutor will assess you across different tasks.
Entry requirements
You must have an interest in children.
What next?
This course will help you to move up to a higher course in childcare and also figure out if you want to work in this area. Whatever you choose next, you’ll have better experience and skills as a base.
Engineering and Technology
NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations
Duration: 2 years
When: Tuesdays, 9am - 3pm
About the course
This course is perfect if you like finding out how things work, putting things together or you have natural practical skills and want to learn more.
Course content
This is a hands-on approach to basic engineering training. You’ll learn the core for a range of engineering skills through set lessons and also units you choose yourself, like metalwork and woodwork.
Assessment
All based on the practical work you do – there are no exams.
Entry requirements
You need an interest in practical skills and want to develop these.
What next?
Take a Level 2 or Level 3 course to improve your skills and job prospects or look for an apprenticeship.
Hairdressing and Beauty
NVQ Level 1 Diploma in Hair and Beauty
Duration: 2 years
When: Tuesdays, 9am - 3pm
About the course
This introduces you to the industry and gives you a taste of both to help you decide if you want to work more in hair or in beauty. You’ll get experience in our salon on site too – which is open to real customers.
Course content
In hairdressing you’ll learn how to shampoo and condition hair properly, help with blow drying and colouring and also understand how salon reception works. For beauty, you’ll look at different treatments like facials, putting on make up and nail services.
Assessment
A multiple choice question paper, assignments and your tutor will assess you on different tasks.
Entry requirements
You must want to make people feel great about themselves.
What next?
Take the next course up or find work in the industry. We also run apprenticeships.
Motorcycle Maintenance
IMI Award Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Motorcycle Maintenance
Duration: 2 years
When: Tuesdays, 9am - 3pm
About the course
The perfect place to start if you love motorbikes or want to work in a garage one day.
Course content
You’ll do practical work in motorcycle repair and servicing including electrics and transmission. You’ll also learn about the industry and how to work safely.
Assessment
Some online tests and also practical assessments in the workshop.
Entry requirements
You need an interest in practical work and
be happy to get your hands dirty.
What next?
Take a Level 2 course to improve your skills and job prospects, or find an apprenticeship.
