Competitions - World Skills UK
World Skills UK is the UK's premier set of skills competitions for young people and adults. World skills UK competitions are held regionally and nationally each year in the UK. The main aim is to raise standards of training and performance at work by strengthening the contribution of skills competitions to the UK economy.
South Thames College encourages students to get involved in the competitions as a valuable learning experience and also as an opportunity to showcase their skills. Competitors receive help and support through all stages of the competition.
Students of the College have had great success over the past few years:
College band - Winners 2008, 2009 and runners up in 2010.
South Thames College was delighted to host a Regional heat for the Popular Music competition this year. Two bands from the college's music department competed and came joint second, enough to win them a place in the National Final!
Hairdressing students – Winners for the Afro-Caribbean Hairdressing Category in 2010 and 2011.
Health and Social – Care students entered the Care Category for World Skills UK in 2011.
WorldSkills UK Champions
In 2008, a WorldSkills champions network was launched with nine College Principals representing the nine English Regions. The growing network now represents education, industry and other sectors across the regions and Devolved Nations. All champions have experienced first-hand the benefits of getting involved in skills competitions, enabling them to share their knowledge of how their involvement benefits both the learner and the organisation.
Our Principal, Sue Rimmer, is a WorldSkills UK Champion for the London Central region.
Champions are appointed by UK Skills with the aim of:
- encouraging organisations to get involved in competitions
- raising the levels of skills and the aspirations of young people
- increasing the number of people participating in WorldSkills UK competitions in the lead up to WorldSkills London 2011 and beyond.

“This course can begin your career. I can get qualifications and experience to become a Police Officer. It can help you when you apply to the police and gives you a bigger advantage against your peers when it comes to getting in. When I complete the course I’m considering two options. One is I would like to work up to CID or I would like to specialise in the dog unit because I like animals. The course and college has helped me with teamwork, communication with others and discipline.”
