The HNC is equivalent to the first year of a standard three-year university degree. After the HNC, you can move onto a HND with us or with another institution and then on to a one-year university top-up programme to earn a full degree.
This course prepares you for a career in business management. Understanding what makes businesses successful and how to respond to market forces can make you employable in lots of different industries. We have a programme of speakers who are experts in their field to give you an oversight of different business practices. One of your assignments will also involve a project in a established business. A useful qualification in its own right, the HNC is also a stepping stone towards a full degree.
You'll study eight units, including these mandatory units:
- The business environment
- Managing financial resources and decisions
- Organisations and behaviour
- Marketing principles.
The name of the course, as it appears on your qualification or certificate, will be HNC Diploma in Business
Assessment will be by vocationally oriented practical assignments, carried out alone or in small groups.
- GCSE maths and English grade A*-C or equivalent; AND
- A related Level 3 qualification, which could be an Access to Higher Education Certificate; OR
- At least one A-level in a relevant subject at grade A*-C OR more than one A-level at grades A*-E; OR
- Related work experience (if you're an older learner we'll take into account your paid and unpaid experience, professional qualifications and life experience).

There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).
Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.
You can progress to the HND at South Thames College or another institution. Alternatively you could look for work.
