This course will introduce you to the technical and creative skills you need to become a documentary film maker. You'll come up with your own idea for a documentary and develop it to produce a short film which you'll shoot and edit yourself in the College studios.
By the end of the course you'll be able to:
- Create and develop an effective idea
- Use effective interview techniques
- Select and use different shooting styles
- Identify and explain the basic functionalities of a digital camera
- Edit your film using Final Cut Pro software.
All stages of the digital film production process are covered in this course, and you'll be able to try out every role involved in the making of a documentary. This includes researcher, camera operator, editor and more.
You'll be assessed through your practical work. Your completed film will be screened at the College and evaluated by your classmates.
It's useful if you have basic knowledge of using a camera and editing film. Basic computer skills are required. The course is suitable if you're a complete beginner, but it could be also used to improve your current skills or as a platform to take on more ambitious documentaries or other film making projects.
There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).
Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.
You could build on the skills you've learnt by taking another film or photograph course at the College.
