A building services design technician helps engineers and other construction professionals in the development of cost effective technical and sustainable design solutions. This involves the production of three-dimensional models, calculations, specifications, reports, and drawings. Their work includes systems such as renewable technologies, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, drainage, lighting, power, controls, and lifts. A design technician could be employed within a design consultancy, a contractor or a manufacturing company

As part of the Apprenticeship programme, learners will also complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering) qualification.

The Apprentice will all complete an online portfolio of evidence which will be supervised by in-company mentors and LCB assessors.

Completion of the Apprenticeship will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an End Point Assessment.

  • Entry Requirements


    Employers will set their own entry requirements, but apprentices will be expected to have at least five GCSEs at Grades A*-C/9-4 including Maths (Grade B/6), English and Science or their equivalent before they enrol.

    If any learners do not have the equivalent of Level 2 in English & Maths, they will be required to complete this as part of their Apprenticeship programme.

    • Construction Design
    • Construction Technology
    • Health & Safety
    • Provision of Primary Services
    • Building Services Science

  • Progression Next Steps


    Once an apprentice has successfully completed this course, they will qualify for registration as an engineering technician by the relevant professional engineering institution.

  • Course Structure


    Apprentices complete 4 days in the workplace, and 1 day at College.

  • Assessment Details


    As part of the Apprenticeship programme, learners will also complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering) qualification.

    They will also be required to produce an on-going evidence log of off-the-job training, relevant to they programme.

    In order to complete the Apprenticeship, learners are required to complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA).
