South Thames College

Art Appreciation: British Painting & Sculpture between the Wars Part 2 - All Levels

Introduction

This course follows the aftermath of term 1’s material, exploring the ways in which Post-Impressionism grows out of Impressionism but also how it outgrows it; we then look at Symbolism’s return to the world of Dreams and Fantasy thereby bridging the gap between the earlier era of the Romantics and that of Surrealism in the decades to come.

Topics range from the paintings and sculptures of Ben Nicholson to the works of Lucian Freud.

Teaching delivery is in a lecture format accompanied by visual images. There is opportunity for discussion and debate about the various topics within the lesson. You will be encouraged to visit galleries to view the originals of some of the artists work studied during the course.
