Our craft courses will teach you a range of creative skills you can use to start a small business making and selling your own unique products. They're also a great way to improve your dexterity, meet new people and develop an interest.
You will learn how to use upholstery tools and equipment through a combination of one-to-one teaching and group demonstrations and discussions. You will choose a project to work on in class and develop your confidence to work independently.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Use the tools confidently and safely
- Have knowledge of traditional and modern upholstery techniques
- Share knowledge with your peers through regular group discussions.
Beginners will be advised on a suitable in-class project e.g. a stool or dining chair. Returning students will be encouraged to work on more challenging projects.
Students work at their own pace on their own projects, supported by one to one to one teaching, constant guidance and group teaching covering various subjects.
You will complete an individual learning plan and provide self-assessment throughout the course. Photos and displays of your completed work will also be used.
There are no entry requirements. The tutor will discuss previous knowledge with you to help you choose a suitable upholstery project.
There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).
Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.
Students will have compiled a portfolio which could be presented to potential clients and employers. They could also progress onto related courses within the college such as Start a Small Craft Business.
All courses run subject to demand and the content listed here should be used as a guide only. Course content may vary according to a range of factors such as course duration, campus, teaching staff and requirements from awarding bodies. Check our course and fee guidelines for further details.

What can I earn?
Having recently retired, Yvonne was looking for something different to do where she could also learn new skills in a completely different field to her career in the NHS.
“I really look forward to Wednesdays and find myself constantly on the lookout for the next project. Each piece has reminded me of skills I had forgotten and taught me some new ones too. I have never considered myself to be artistic so it has been immensely satisfying to find an outlet for my more creative side.”
