South Thames College

Home Interior Design - Next Step - All Levels

This course is being taught online during the Summer 2020 Term.

You will be developing the topics covered in the introduction course in more depth.

We will examine the key design processes involved in styling a living room and dining room by looking at contemporary interiors, and styles from around the world.

Using basic principles of interior design, we will learn how to develop a unique scheme through group discussions, and practical exercises, including colour theory, lighting, window treatments, finishes, measuring, preparing draft drawings/furniture layouts and planning a project.

We will explore techniques on how to create that “designer look” including how to display collections, accessories, hang pictures, layering soft furnishings, prepare table settings and present a scheme.

You will cover the following topics:

  • Research and develop own ideas/projects, and effectively translate these into a workable and unique scheme.

  • Understand the basic rules of colour, layering soft furnishings, lighting, materials and finishes.

  • Be able to measure, prepare draft drawings and plan your own projects including tips on how to update a kitchen (without buying a new one).

  • Learn how to visualise and present a scheme by creating concept and sample boards, as well as accessories and soft furnishing boards.

Assessment will be on-going and include monitoring progress through individual learning plans.
