The HNC is equivalent to the first year of a standard three-year university degree. After the HNC, you can move onto a HND with us or with another institution and then on to a one-year university top-up programme to earn a full degree.
This highly practical course is ideal if you are interested in studying videogame development, and you already have a portfolio of impressive design work, including some 3D modelling and texture work. On the HNC you will 3D model, texture and animate using industry standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe CC, ZBrush and Substance Painter. The assets you create will then be brought to life using the Epic Unreal Engine.
The HNC (level 4) is made up of the following units:

- Game Development Practices (Practical project: Group Game Project)

- Creative Media Industry (Theory: Exploring the Videogame Industry)
The HND (level 5) is made up of the following units:
- Advanced 3D Modelling (Practical project: Creating 3D Characters)
- Advanced Animation (Practical project: Rigging & Animating 3D Characters)
- Advanced Environment & Level Design (Practical project: Building a Game Level)
- Scripting for Games (Practical project: Using Blueprint to develop Unreal Interactivity)
- Collaborative Project (Practical project: Group Game Project)
- Advanced Game Development Studies (Practical: Creating a Vertical Slice)
- Personal Professional Development (Theory: Personal Development Goals)
The name of the course, as it appears on your qualification or certificate, will be L4 - BTEC HNC Creative Media Production (Game Development) (RQF) - Yr 1 of 1 (PEARSON)
Assessment is through practical and written assignments. You'll be given written and verbal feedback and action points to help you to develop your work.
A portfolio of prior art/design work including 3D modelled and textured objects and:
- GCSE maths and English grade A*-C/9-4 or equivalent; AND
- A related Level 3 qualification, such as a BTEC or UAL Games Design qualification, Access to Higher Education Certificate; OR
- At least one A-level in a relevant subject at grade A*-C OR more than one A-level at grades A*-E; OR
- Related work experience (if you're an older learner we'll take into account your paid and unpaid experience, professional qualifications and life experience. Portfolio essential).
For international students, you will need an IELTS score of 5.5 (minimum 5.0 in each section) or equivalent. Find out more in the international pages.
There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).
