South Thames College

BSc (Hons) Live Sound Production (UoN) - Level 6

Introduction

This unique degree will give you an intense and comprehensive guide to everything you need to prepare you for a career in live sound production. It is delivered exclusively in partnership with Britannia Row Productions, one of the world's foremost live sound companies.

You'll work directly with Britannia Row Production engineers and technicians as well as your tutors on an array of live production modules to develop your skills in areas such as:

  • Live sound system design and optimisation
  • Digital live sound technology
  • Audio electrics
  • Mix applications
  • Studio and live multi-track recording and more.

Assessment

You'll be assessed over three years, with two semesters a year. You will submit work throughout each semester. Assessments are a mixture of theory and practical assignments. Your theoretical knowledge will inform large and varied practical projects and you'll organise events independently as part of your assessment.

Entry Requirements

You should have:

  • A full Level 3 qualification equating to 96 UCAS points, for example a Level 3 Extended Diploma or a mix of A Levels. Ideally this will include a relevant subject such as music, music technology or electrical design and/or physics.
  • GCSE English and maths grade A*-C/9-4.
  • Alternatively you could have equivalent relevant industry experience.

You will need to provide some evidence of your work. This could be audio recordings, portfolio or computer-based, depending on your skills. You will also have an interview which may require you to prepare some work or complete tasks. If you are abroad, this can be arranged via Skype/video-call.

Materials

There is a materials fee to cover the cost of trips and additional resources you'll use on the course. This cost will be confirmed at the start of each year and will depend on the projects and assesments for those semesters. Please talk to us about materials costs if you think this might affect your enjoyment of the course or ability to finish it.

Next Steps

The practical skills and industry experience you'll gain on this course should make you significantly employable. You'll leave with an understanding of the skills required to start your own network of contacts to help you get ahead in the live sound industry. Your tutors will support you and give advice on finding employment.

You could also go on to further your studies by taking a MA level course.
