You'll learn the specialist skills and techniques to make your own violin. This practical course will give you a high level of hand skills to create violins of different styles. As you progress, you'll be expected to make at least one instrument. You'll have the chance to follow your own ideas and interests to create a violin in a style of your choice.
- Working with wood
- Use and maintenance of tools
- Essential drawing and sketching skills
- Basic metalwork and the making of small tools.
The name of the course, as it appears on your qualification or certificate, will be NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations - Level 1
The tutor will give you feedback throughout your course.
Three GCSEs including maths and English, or other related qualifications and experience. You'll also need a short interview with a tutor who will check the course is right for you. To guarantee a place, you should aim to book at least a month before the course starts.
There is a fee to pay for the timber you'll use to make your first instrument. You might want to buy your own tools to help you practise and develop at home. Talk to a tutor for more information about this.
You can progress to a Level 2 course at South Thames College to improve your skills in making musical instruments.
