If you want to take your first step towards a career in the health and fitness industry in the context of gym-based exercise, then this course will help you develop your knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career in this field.
This qualification is widely recognised as the industrys minimum requirement to practice as a fitness instructor. You will combine class-based study with health and fitness training, together with formal exams to complete the qualification.
You will also be involved in fitness testing and instructing activities involving college students and members of the public. You will learn how to teach a variety of gym-based exercises and use a range of equipment to plan and deliver gym sessions. You will also learn how to effectively support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity.
These experiences will increase your employability and help you develop the skills needed to become a successful fitness instructor.
You will be studying a total of 6 units:
- Anatomy & Physiology for exercise
- Principle of exercise, fitness & health
- Health, safety & welfare in a fitness environment
- Know how to support clients who take part in exercise & physical activity
- Planning gym-based exercise
- Instructing gym-based exercise
You will also need to undertake at least 36 hours work experience and you are responsible for finding your own work experience placement within the sports industry.
You will be assessed through practical performance, learning assessment record (LAR), practical observations; externally set multiple choice exams; completion of workbooks/worksheets.
In order to be considered for this qualification, you will need to be at least 16 years old, you will need a minimum of four GCSEs A*-D (9-3) including English, Maths, Science and/or PE. A positive reference from previous school/college that includes attendance, punctuality, behaviour and competence to work. You will also need to demonstrate that you practice at least one sport or that you fitness train.
You will need fitness gear to complete your practical work.
This qualification can lead to employment as a Fitness Instructor within Gym based exercise. Once this qualification has been completed learners are eligible to join the Register of Exercise Professional (REPs) as a level 2 member, specialising in their area of expertise.
