South Thames College

Education and Training Award - Level 3

Introduction

Interested in trying out the teaching profession without committing to long-term study? This is the course for you. It's also suitable if you currently do a small amount of teaching and want to expand your skill set. This replaces our PTLLS (preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector) course.

This course introduces you to effective teaching methods. It features a variety of teaching and learning approaches including seminars, group work, peer teaching, tutorials and presentations. Course content includes:

  • Lesson planning
  • Communication skills
  • Resource development
  • Different assessment methods
  • Legislation in education
  • Professional reflection.

Assessment

You'll build up a portfolio of assignments over the course. You'll also carry out a short session of teaching in class.

Entry Requirements

You'll need to demonstrate good levels of written English. You'll also need a willingness to develop teaching approaches that are appropriate for adults with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

Materials

There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).

Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.

Next Steps

Once you've achieved this award, you'll be in a much stronger position to apply for teaching hours in the further education and skills sector. You may also want to enrol on the DET/PGCE course and become a fully qualified teacher.
