Diploma in Education and Training (DET)/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Training (PGCE) (CCCU) - Level 6
This is the established general route to teaching in the further education and skills sector and is essential if you want to build a teaching career in further and adult education. It conforms to existing government standards regarding education of teachers.
This course is run in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. It gives you fully qualified teacher status in the further education and skills sector. If you already have a degree you can work towards the PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) otherwise you'll be awarded a Level 5 diploma. Each module is worth 20 credits. Year 1 and 2 modules include:
- Planning and assessing learning
- Learning theories
- Developing teaching resources
- Managing the classroom or training environment
- Approaches to delivering your specialist subject
- Education legislation
- Curriculum studies.
You'll start at Level 4 though advance through to either Level 5 or Level 6 over the course.
You'll be observed teaching and in the different modules you'll have to present, write essays, carry out research and keep a professional development record.
You need a Level 3 qualification in the subject area you want to teach or considerable professional experience, and you'll need to be teaching or training while the course is running. You'll also need a good standard of written and spoken English.
There may be materials you need to help with your studies. You'll either make a one-off payment for these when you enrol, or you'll buy them during the course. Your tutor will talk to you about this at interview or in your first class (if you don't need an interview).
Depending on your course and circumstances, you may be able to get funding to help with materials fees. Please check with us when you come in for interview or enrolment.
You can start teaching in the further education and skills sector. You could also move on to a BA or MA in lifelong learning.
