Diploma in Education and Training (DET)/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education and Training (PGCE) (CCCU) Generic Pathway

This is the established general route to teaching in the further education and skills sector and is essential if you want to build a teaching career in further and adult education. It conforms to existing government standards regarding education of teachers.

  • Entry Requirements


    You need a Level 3 qualification in the subject area you want to teach or considerable professional experience, and you'll need to be teaching or training while the course is running. You'll also need a good standard of written and spoken English for example L2 or GCSE.

  • Course Content


    This course is run in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. It gives you fully qualified teacher status in the further education and skills sector. If you already have a degree you can work towards the PGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) otherwise you'll be awarded a Level 5 diploma. Each module is worth 20 credits. Year 1 and 2 modules include:

    • Planning and assessing learning
    • Learning theories
    • Developing teaching resources
    • Managing the classroom or training environment
    • Approaches to delivering your specialist subject
    • Education legislation
    • Professionalism
    • Curriculum studies.

    You can start teaching in the further education and skills sector and go forward to achieve your QTLS.

  • Course Structure


    You'll start at Level 4 though advance through to either Level 5 or Level 6 over the course.

  • Assessment Details


    You'll be observed teaching and in the different modules you'll have to present, write essays, carry out research and keep a professional development record.
