A South Thames student received the 2012 Hairdressing Student of the Year Award from Softsheen Carson this week, after having been victorious in a national competition hosted by the Professional Hairstyling Company. The SofTY, as it is known in the industry, is an annual competition for hairdressing students all over the UK and a competition which the College has pedigree in, having won the competition in 2010.

News_11.jpgSix learners competed for South Thames College in various World Skills UK skill competitions at the Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham. The event had thousands of visitors over the three days with over 500 competitors in 61 competitions. Four of the six South Thames students that competed won medals.

The club is in the third year of running a Senior Academy at the College's Merton campus. Its aim is to develop outstanding football players whilst giving them the opportunity to study for a BTEC qualification.

It has been a long journey for the young men who competed in trials against 240 other young hopefuls back in October in the hope of securing a place in the England College's squad. They beat stiff competition to make the final 20 and will have the chance to travel to Italy in May to play in a tournament against players from all over Europe.
