Students shine in AFC Wimbledon Talent scout

498031f7-23a5-4b7a-b2cf-0b4669013dfcTwo students from South Thames College (Brendan Kiernan,18 and Charlie Girdler, 17) have been selected to play for the England Colleges squad through their involvement with AFC Wimbledon Football Club. The club is in the third year of running a Senior Academy at the College's Merton campus. Its aim is to develop outstanding football players whilst giving them the opportunity to study for a BTEC qualification.

It has been a long journey for the young men who competed in trials against 240 other young hopefuls back in October in the hope of securing a place in the England College's squad. They beat stiff competition to make the final 20 and will have the chance to travel to Italy in May to play in a tournament against players from all over Europe.

AFC Wimbledon Senior Manager, Mark Robinson said "Both (students) performed exceptionally well and Brendan has since signed a professional contract with AFC Wimbledon and with Charlie not turning 18 until May I'm sure he won't be far behind."

The teenage students are studying on courses in Business and Sports at the College's Merton campus and commit to six hours training a week. The club insists however that they must complete their studies and works closely with the students to ensure they do.

Maureen Fuller Head of School for Business Leisure and Management at the College said "We are extremely proud of the progress our students have made and that they have been selected to represent the country. We wish them the best of luck with their future football aspirations and in achieving their qualification at South Thames College, Merton."
