best learner

South Thames College Health & Social Care student has recently been awarded Best Learner with a prestigious presentation at the House of Lords.

The Committee of South London Principals (COSLP) held its annual Best Learner Awards and the winner of the award for South Thames College is Rhianna Larkai. Rhianna enjoyed the prestigious event at the Cholmondeley Room, House of Lords with her guests on Thursday 23 May.

Rhianna’s tutor is thrilled: “Rhianna is an inspirational and selfless student who underwent a procedure to donate her stem cells to a patient with blood cancer. Having watched a presentation at college from the Anthony Nolan charity, Rhianna immediately signed up and joined the stem cell transplant register. She was matched with a patient and didn’t hesitate in undergoing a procedure in which doctors collected stem cells for transplant.

“Throughout this process, Rhianna stayed on top of her Level 3 coursework and always works hard to achieve distinctions. She also gave a presentation to her fellow learners about her experience of being a stem cell donor, explaining the importance of making a difference. Rhianna’s generosity and selflessness helped saved someone’s life – making her extremely deserving of this award.”

Go Green for Grenfell Pic

To mark the second anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire the South Thames College Enrichment team organised a ‘Wear Green for Grenfell’ day to support and remember the lives perished and the survivors of the Grenfell fire.

The team had a stand in the South Thames College main atrium during lunchtime, where staff and students turned up on mass to show their support for the cause.

It was great to see so many people getting involved, both staff and students were dressed in green to show their support and respect for those affected by the tragedy that changed the lives of so many.

South Thames College raised an amazing £150 for the Grenfell United Charity, a huge thanks to all the staff and students for their fantastic support.

Wandsworth Oasis Photo

Last week saw South Thames College students from a variety of courses come together for the end of year charity fashion show. South Thames College partnered with a local South London charity, Wandsworth Oasis, who are celebrating 30 years of HIV support and prevention through its 10 South London charity shops and fundraising events.

The event showcased the type of sustainable fashion that can be re-used and upcycled, a very topical subject with retail brands continuously being scrutinised for fast fashion and the effect this has on the environment.

It was a truly collaborative effort as students from a range of courses were involved in the show, gaining invaluable first-hand experience of event production.

The Art & Design students worked on style redesign of the clothes which were exhibited on the night with Beauty & Media Make up students styling the models. Construction students built the stage and the TV & Film Production students filmed throughout the event.
