UAL Level 2 Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology (Media)

This is an exciting course that will develop your skills and knowledge within the core principles of creative media (film/photography), with a strong focus on creativity and experimentation. You will complete practical projects, research your ideas and develop ideas for responding to projects in media along with improving confidence when talking about your own work and that of others. The course is a great introduction to creative media and film and it will help build your understanding of the subject and the practical knowledge ready for future study or work.

    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    4 x GCSE's at D/3 or above, or a Level 1 qualification in a relevant subject.

    Your GCSE profile must include either maths and / or English , or a Functional Skills qualification in maths and / or English.

  • Course Content


    Projects cover a variety of disciplines within media such as photography, advertising, film making, graphic design, and online media. Practical and contextual themes include:

    • An introduction to a range of methods and skills used in support of creative media production.
    • An introduction to production processes and technical skills used in creative media.
    • Understanding an audience in creative media production which will develop your understanding of diverse audience needs and explore methods of effectively communicating your ideas.
    • Contextual research for creative media production.
    • Exploring audio production and technology.
    • Exploring visual production and technology.
    • Exploring interactive media production and technology.
    • Personal project and presentation in creative media production. For this final project, you will use the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in previous units and apply them to the production and presentation of a creative media personal project.

    As a student on this course you will have access to the following state of the art industry standard equipment and facilities:

    • Industry standard Canon cameras and high performance mac editing suites running Adobe Creative Suite
    • Range of Industry standard kit including Stabilisers, Gimbals, LED lighting, Zoom Audio Recorders, and more
  • Progression Next Steps


    Progression will be onto the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. This progression to Level 3 indicates the next important step in forging possible employment within the creative industries or moving onto university as an undergraduate. The Level Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology will provide you with an introduction to a broad range of creative and technical skills in media production, enabling you to acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress to further education and employment within the industry.

  • Course Structure


    The diploma is run across the academic year and consists of 8 units delivered within set projects, each with a different focus and a real-life industry scenario. This means that you will produce a very large body of work that incorporates many different creative problem solving opportunities that reflect a really broad range of visual arts pathways. Projects typically last for 6 weeks each with the final project lasting around 8 weeks. You can then choose a specialism for the final project of the year which may inform your future level 3 plans within the creative industries.

  • Assessment Details


    On your course you will be assessed through a variety of methods which may include;

    • Online Blog/Vlog entries
    • Presentations
    • Audio recordings
    • Video outcomes

    Projects are assessed halfway through (formative) and at the end (summative). There will be frequent 1:1 support from teachers to help develop your skills and work, along with group activities and class demonstrations of new skills. The practical tasks are mapped against the UAL awarding body criteria and will help to develop a very wide range of skills and knowledge. The final project (unit 8) of the course is longer as it forms the overall grade for the whole year which will be either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
