This came about from Matt Walker who had heard that the person organising this initiative, Penni ‘Sheen for Scrubs’ was looking for help and he suggested that STC Fashion students could possibly offer some assistance. The creative team quickly got in touch and Penni handed over some patterns and fabric to the team within a couple of days so the students could make a start. There are others contributing to this throughout our region but so far STC H.E. Access Fashion students and Lesley Walker (Course Leader) are making scrubs from recycled materials and more are lined up once they have more fabric and patterns.
Matt Walker, Deputy Head of School is working with the East Sheen residents group who are fund raising and has so far raised over £1,500 to pay for the materials to make the scrubs and also to make scrub bags for the key workers to carry PPE home with them.
Matt commented, “As soon as I heard about the initiative I was keen for the students at South Thames College to be involved and the Access to HE: Fashion students have fully embraced the opportunity to do what they can to help the NHS making scrubs from recycled materials and there are more lined up once we have more fabric and patterns.”“It’s a fantastic effort by the department, Lesley and the students are doing such a phenomenal job with this and James is liaising and co-ordinating with all parties to turn a small idea into a reality, a real credit to South Thames College.”Vicky Harding, South Thames College Access to HE: Fashionstudent commented, “At the beginning of this I felt a bit useless but I’m glad that the skills I have are valuable in making a contribution to support the frontline.”
