MEI’s Further Education (FE) Maths Challenge is a competition for post-16 students who are working towards gaining a Functional Skills maths qualification or improving their GCSE Mathematics grade. Three South Thames College teams: the Funkies, Ein2steins and Go Forth all gathered last week for the college finals.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement and anticipation when the various contestants were presented with the Kahoot quiz and the Tarsia Jigsaw Puzzle.  The clock was set, participants hunched intensely over their task, concentrating, anticipating on their moves, when the bell rung students stepped back as math tutors calculated their scores.

David McClymont, Vice Principal, and Chris Dodd, Head of Employability, presented participants with their certificates and vouchers.

Nataliya Stanley, Extended Business Level 3 and the winner of the 1st in Einstein’s category, commented: “It was amazing and not just to participate in the competition but to mix with students from other vocational areas that we wouldn’t normally mix with.  It was great how we all joined together and had fun.”

The Regional Finals will take place in March 2023.  The venue will be in a much larger area where a more advanced level of Kahoot and Tarsia Jigsaw will be in operation, watch this space!
